Signal uses AI to help you understand patterns, connections, and insights across safeguarding incidents.

AI-Generated Summaries

Every incident automatically receives an AI-generated summary that helps you quickly understand the key points and context.

What’s Included

The AI summary analyzes the incident and provides:

Key Points

The most important details extracted from the incident description

Risk Assessment

Identified risk factors and concerns based on the incident content

Pattern Recognition

Connections to previous incidents or known concerns for this student

Policy Guidance

Relevant safeguarding policies that apply to this incident

Viewing AI Summaries

1

Open an Incident

Click on any incident to view its details
2

Find the Summary Tab

The AI Summary appears at the top of the incident details
3

Review Insights

Read through the summary, identified risks, and policy guidance
4

Use Suggested Actions

The summary includes suggested next steps based on the analysis
AI summaries are generated within seconds of creating an incident. If policies are added or updated, you can regenerate the summary to include new guidance.

How It Works

Signal’s AI analyzes:
  • The incident description and details
  • Student history and previous incidents
  • Configured safeguarding policies
  • Patterns across similar incidents in your school
AI summaries are a helpful tool, but they don’t replace professional judgment. Always review the summary critically and apply your safeguarding expertise.

Incident Timeline

View a chronological history of all incidents for a student, helping you identify patterns and escalation.

Accessing the Timeline

  1. Navigate to Students
  2. Select a student
  3. Click the Timeline tab
  4. View all incidents in chronological order

Timeline Features

All incidents are displayed in date order, with the most recent at the top. Each entry shows:
  • Date and time
  • Category
  • Brief summary
  • Staff member who recorded it
  • Priority level
Filter the timeline by:
  • Date range: Last week, month, year, or custom dates
  • Category: Show only specific types of incidents
  • Priority: Filter by high, medium, or low priority
  • Staff member: See incidents recorded by specific staff
  • High priority incidents: Red indicator
  • Family incidents: Blue link icon showing connection to siblings
  • Open actions: Yellow flag showing pending follow-up
  • Agency involvement: Purple icon when external agencies are involved
Export the timeline to:
  • PDF report for meetings or multi-agency sharing
  • CSV for data analysis
  • Print view for hard copy records

Identifying Patterns

Use the timeline to spot:

Frequency Changes

Increasing or decreasing incident rates over time

Trigger Patterns

Incidents occurring at specific times (e.g., Mondays, after holidays)

Category Clusters

Multiple incidents of the same type in a short period

Escalation

Growing severity or complexity of concerns
Review timelines before parent meetings, multi-agency meetings, or when concerns escalate to get a complete picture of the student’s situation.

Relationship Map

Visualize connections between students, incidents, and people involved to understand the broader context.

What is the Relationship Map?

The relationship map is an interactive visualization that shows:
  • Students involved in incidents together
  • Family connections and sibling incidents
  • Staff members frequently involved
  • Agency contacts and external relationships
  • Common locations and contexts

Viewing the Relationship Map

Open a Student Profile

Navigate to the student you want to analyze
2

Click Relationship Map

Select the Relationship Map tab
3

Explore Connections

Understanding the Map

  • Blue circles: Students
  • Green circles: Staff members
  • Purple circles: External agencies
  • Orange circles: Locations
  • Gray lines: Connections (hover to see incident count)
  • Thick lines: Multiple incidents connecting two nodes
  • Zoom: Mouse wheel or pinch gesture
  • Pan: Click and drag
  • Filter: Show/hide specific node types
  • Time range: Adjust to show connections from specific periods
  • Reset view: Return to default zoom and position

Use Cases

Peer Relationships

Identify which students are frequently involved in incidents together (bullying, friendship issues)

Multi-Agency Coordination

See which external agencies are involved and how they’re connected to different students

Location Patterns

Discover if incidents cluster in specific locations (playground, specific classroom)

Family Context

Understand connections between siblings and family-wide concerns
The relationship map updates in real-time as new incidents are recorded, giving you current insights into student connections and patterns.

Insights Page

The dedicated Insights page provides powerful analytics to help you understand incident trends across your school.
The Insights page is only available to users with DSL, Deputy DSL, or Owner roles.

Accessing Insights

Click Insights in the main navigation menu (between Incidents and Settings) to access the full analytics dashboard.

Cumulative Incidents Chart

The main chart shows cumulative incidents over the academic year, helping you track trends and compare performance:
  • Current year line: Shows cumulative incidents week by week for the current academic year
  • Previous year line: Dotted line showing the same period from the previous academic year for comparison

Filtering Options

Use the filters to focus on specific areas:
Filter by top-level incident categories to see trends for specific concern types (e.g., Bullying, Mental Health, Attendance).
Filter by year group or specific class to analyze incidents for particular student cohorts.
Select a comparison academic year and class to see how current trends compare to historical data. The comparison appears as a dotted line on the chart.

Key Metrics

At the top of the Insights page, you’ll see summary statistics:
MetricDescription
Incidents this academic yearTotal count with percentage change from last year
Attendance this yearOverall attendance percentage with year-on-year comparison
The percentage change indicators help you quickly identify whether concerns are increasing or decreasing compared to the previous year.

Regenerate summaries after adding new safeguarding policies to see how they apply to existing incidents.

Best Practices

Regular Reviews

Review student timelines weekly or monthly to catch emerging patterns early

Multi-Agency Meetings

Use relationship maps in meetings to show connections and context visually

Strategic Planning

Use trend analysis to inform staff training, resource allocation, and intervention programs

Early Intervention

Act on AI-identified patterns before concerns escalate

Privacy Considerations

All insights, timelines, and relationship maps respect user permissions. You’ll only see data for students and incidents you have access to based on your role and user group.
When sharing insights:
  • Use Parent Mode when reviewing with parents to hide sensitive information
  • Export only what’s necessary for the specific meeting or purpose
  • Be mindful of GDPR when including student data in reports
Learn more about Parent Mode for safe information sharing.

Troubleshooting

  • Check that the incident description contains enough detail for analysis
  • Ensure relevant policies are configured in your system
  • Try regenerating the summary
  • If the issue persists, contact your Signal admin
  • Check your date range filter—expand it to see older incidents
  • Verify your user permissions—you may not have access to all incidents
  • Check if category filters are hiding certain incidents
  • Ensure there are enough incidents to create meaningful connections
  • Adjust the time range to include more data
  • Check that you’re viewing the correct student’s map
Analytics are only available to Manager and Admin roles. Contact your Signal admin if you need access.
